Is it true if you get chicken pox at an older age there are certain risks involved?

I'm not sure if I believe it, but I have heard the older you get when you have the chickenpox the worse it gets. I never had chickenpox, or the shot. My mother also had it twice contradicting the normal amount. I'm not really interested getting the shot, but if I have any children will I need to get it, or will it just pass through like a normal virus?
