How can people still be religious (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc) after all of the scientific advancement?

After all of the scientific advancement in biology, astronomy, archaeology, etc I don't why people especially in America are so religious. Personally i feel debating things like religion and politics are pointless because they don't changes peoples ideas; But i still find it fun to do with close friends and family. When ever talk with with a religious peer/ family i find myself to be on the winning side and even have them starting to agree with me until they final stop and don't want to talk about it anymore. The conclusion I've drawn is that a lot of people deep down inside don't believe these religious doctrines because of their common sense; but also don't want to admit that what they thought to be real for such a long time was a lie. I'd like to hear your input on this so please comment!
