Acid sandy soils are poor at preserving metals, soil that is waterlogged can preserve so long as it has been continuously waterlogged. For the same reason metals often survive in dense clays. however the oxidation processes that destroy ancient artefacts is complex, and electrolytic effects and general soil chemistry also need to be considered. The case of the gold coin (above) is not valid, gold survives in virtually all conditions!
